Excavation & Grading in Richmond, VA

Clearing gets the brush off. Excavation and grading is what makes the land actually usable. Stumps out, ground shaped, lot ready to build on.

Mulching a property leaves you with cleared ground. Excavation and grading is the next step: pulling the stumps and root balls, shaping the dirt, establishing fall so water runs off, and leaving a surface you can build on, drive on, or plant. ClearCut Land RVA runs a CAT excavator alongside our skid steer, which lets us take a property from overgrown to build-ready without bringing in a second contractor. Free on-site estimates across Richmond and Central Virginia.

Stump Removal and Grubbing

Mulching and clearing take vegetation down to the ground. Grubbing takes out what is left underneath: stumps, root balls, and root mats that will otherwise sit in the way of anything you want to do with the land. With an excavator and thumb we pull stumps whole rather than grinding them in place, which clears the root system instead of leaving it to rot underground and settle later. That matters if you are putting a building, a driveway, a pad, or a lawn over the top of it. We handle single yard stumps, full fence lines, and whole lots that need every stump out before grading. Old stumps that have been sitting for years usually come out easier than fresh ones.

Grading, Leveling, and Build-Ready Site Work

Grading is the difference between cleared land and usable land. We cut down high spots, fill low spots, shape the ground so water sheds instead of ponding, and leave a consistent surface. On a build site that means a level, compacted area with proper fall away from where the structure is going. On a residential lot it means a yard you can mow, plant, and actually walk across after a rain. Building pads, shed and garage pads, and equipment or container pads all get the same treatment: excavate to grade, shape the fall, and leave it ready for gravel, concrete, or framing. Because we do the clearing and the grading, you are not paying two contractors to mobilize to the same property, and nobody is standing around waiting on the other guy's schedule.

Driveways, Gravel, and Access

Gravel driveways in Central Virginia fail the same way over and over. The gravel does not disappear, it migrates. It gets pushed to the edges and into the ditch line, the crown flattens out, and then water runs down the driveway instead of off it, which cuts ruts and washes out the base. Most of the time we can reclaim what is already there. We pull the existing gravel back out of the edges, reshape the driveway with a proper crown so it sheds water, and re-establish the ditch or shoulder that carries runoff away. In a large share of jobs that means little or no new stone has to be brought in. We also cut new driveways and access roads on rural and wooded property, including clearing the path, shaping the base, and establishing drainage so the new road does not wash out the first winter.

Trenching and Utility Runs

We open trenches for water lines, electrical conduit, drainage pipe, and other utility runs on residential and light commercial property, and we backfill and restore the surface afterward. On new development work, open-cut trenching for conduit is a common need, and an excavator is the right tool for it. On existing property it is usually a service line to a shop, barn, well, or outbuilding. We call in utility locates before we dig. Anything requiring a licensed trade to make the final connection, such as electrical or plumbing tie-ins, is handled by that trade. We do the excavation.

What It Costs

Excavation and grading is priced by the project, not by the hour. Most residential jobs run from around $1,500 for focused work like a handful of stumps or a driveway reshape, up to $8,000 or more for full lot grubbing and grading on a build site. What drives the price: how much material has to be moved, how many stumps and how big, whether soil needs to be brought in or hauled off, access for the equipment, and how precise the final grade has to be. One thing worth knowing if you are already getting a clearing quote: adding the grubbing and grading to the same visit is almost always cheaper than doing it as a separate job later, because the mobilization is already paid for. Ask about it during your estimate.

Equipment and Scope

We run a CAT compact track loader with a forestry mulching head and a CAT 306 excavator with a bucket, thumb, ripper, and angle blade. That combination covers clearing, grubbing, digging, shaping, and material handling on the same property in the same trip. That is a residential and light commercial scale of equipment. It is the right size for house lots, subdivision lots, driveways, pads, drainage work, and small acreage. For large-scale commercial earthmoving, deep utility work, or anything requiring a full dirt crew and haul fleet, we will tell you honestly that you want a different contractor. We do not install septic systems, which require a licensed onsite sewage installer in Virginia. We do not perform work in tidal wetlands or resource protection areas without the required approvals in place, and we will flag it during the estimate if your property looks like it may fall under those rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you remove stumps, or only grind them?
We pull stumps out with an excavator and thumb rather than grinding them in place. That removes the root ball instead of leaving it underground to rot and settle, which matters if you plan to build, pave, or establish lawn over the area.
How much does grading cost in Richmond, VA?
Most residential excavation and grading projects run $1,500 to $8,000 depending on how much material has to be moved, stump count and size, access, and how precise the finish grade needs to be. Every job is quoted as a project price in writing.
Can you clear and grade in the same visit?
Yes, and it is usually the cheaper way to do it. We run the mulcher and the excavator, so clearing, grubbing, and grading can happen back to back on one property instead of paying two contractors to mobilize separately. Jobs needing both machines are typically scheduled as two days.
Can you fix my washed-out gravel driveway without buying new gravel?
Most of the time, yes. The gravel is usually still there, just pushed into the edges and ditch. We pull it back, re-crown the driveway so it sheds water, and re-establish the drainage. New stone is often not needed, or only a small amount.
Do you build ponds?
No. Pond and impoundment work in Virginia can trigger state and county permitting requirements, and it is outside the scope of the equipment we run. We stick to grading, grubbing, drainage, pads, driveways, and site work.
What areas do you serve for excavation and grading?
Richmond and Central Virginia, including Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent, Louisa, and surrounding counties.
